In the Spotlight
In 2023 with the increased activity in the world of stone sculpture in the greater Taos area, TJ invited other stone sculptors to exhibit in the landscape at Studio Santiago and Gallery in Taos.
Beginning in November 2024, READING ART, which was started to spotlight the sculptures of artist/sculptor TJ Mabrey will expand to include others.
Each month a spotlight will be presented on the creative work done by stone carvers who live, work, teach, exhibit and contribute to the vibrant activity seen in the stone carving community of Taos and environs of Northern New Mexico.
PETRO HUL
FREE CARVING
"Nature, specifically the raw geology of the Southwest's canyon country, has a great influence on my sculpture. It is through stone that I explore my reverence for the natural world."
-Petro Hul
Petro Hul has been a stonemason, a foundryman, a toolmaker of meticulous craftsmanship, and ran the shop at a university sculpture department. But it is his unique and endearing talent for teaching that allows him to share his vast knowledge of stone and tools with students.

BRITT BROWN
TRUTH
Romancing the Stone
by Rebekah Powers
Valentines Day goes back to the Greeks and Romans, the Roman god Cupid with his quiver of arrows and the poet Chaucer in the Middle Ages who was the first to link February 14th with love. On this day, we choose to spotlight the work of an amazing sculptor who has formally studied in both Italy and Greece, who fell in love with marble and has been romancing the stone ever since.

BRIAN BARRETO
PASO I
by Rebekah Powers
BRIAN BARRETO is a stone sculptor for whom carving is communication and an avenue for expressing identity into the larger world of art and artists. His passion to be part of something bigger transcends sculpture. As one who strengthens the creative fabric of New Mexico, we celebrate the knuckle-busting work that he puts into his art and his determination to share the concepts that move him to create.

SCHUYLER BLANCHARD
MANUFACTURED SIGNIFICANCE
by Rebekah Powers
Schuyler Blanchard’s sculpture eludes specific or singular interpretations. At one point in his early career, repairing and reconstructing sculpture in Philadelphia, Schuyler felt a pull away from the ornamental scalloping architecture of the city.
This “call to adventure” led him to the foothills of the Sangre de Christo mountains of New Mexico. “I felt drawn to the mountains, closer to strata and untouched stone. My intention is to undertake a more direct sculptural conversation that is often not permitted by representational sculpture."
